I just came across this selfie of a younger me, an excited me—a throwback to the day I got an Nintendo Switch four years ago. Can you tell that I was excited? I’m not sure myself, I think I looked little underwhelmed that day!
Jokes aside, I was—and still am—a gamer. Sometimes when life and its many inexorable tasks and responsibilities become too much, it’s nice to have that escapism, jumping into an alter-ego character in another world altogether. A different world with levels and obstacles I can reach and overcome, leaving me with a feeling of accomplishment that helps give me a certain confidence, a foundation upon which to approach reality. Sometimes, though, it isn’t that deep. Sometimes it’s just entertainment. What’s life without fun? A few mindless hours of gaming? As they say, all work and no play…
I don’t play Zelda so much anymore, but I do every so often. Every time I do, it reminds me of this day, this memory. The excitement I felt getting this console and this game. How eager I was to play, and how quickly I got sucked into it. I can’t quite imagine these past few years without it. Here’s to many more!
