Jude Law rocks as Hamlet
The prospect of Jude Law playing Hamlet was one that left us a bit intrigued/anxious/overwhelmed. Could he pull it off? I mean, it is a demanding character that has daunted such acting luminaries as Dame Kenneth Branagh and Dame Daniel Day Lewis. Well, we can report Jude’s sexily brattish Hamlet rocked the shit. We saw him on Tuesday in the Donmar production at the Wyndham’s Theatre in London’s West End. Penelope Wilton as Gertrude had the right amount of maternal remorse and the chemistry between her and Jude was overwhelming. It was quite a cinematic production, deploying an impressive array of lighted, music and snow. The clothes were also achingly on-trend, with all the cast looking like they had raided MUJI and All Saints before treading the boards. But all these de jour touches didn’t detract from the harrowing momentum of the tragedy. Hamlet is only on for tomorrow (Saturday 22 August at 2.30pm and 7.30pm) before it transfers over to Broadway. Sadly, tickets have completely sold out. Woe. But panic not. A handful of standing seats will be released tomorrow morning. You’ll probably have to start queuing at five am to get a ticket, but if you like your tragedies served up in a poisoned chalice, it’s worth the early start. Seriously.
