Planning wood @ Parents

Planning wood @ Parents

This weekend I went home to help my family with some work around the house. Among fixing my grandmother’s computer I also helped my dad plane some wood for the overhangs of the new roof we will have done to replace the old house roof. The boards were 15-20 feet long X 18 inches wide X 2 inches thick. It was nice to do something with my hands for once that didn’t involve a compter! HAHA – My mom was nice enough to take a photo of me doing something for once! 😛

Pikachu by Rihards Donskis

Rihards aka apofiss does amazing arts of cats and classic vidya gaem characters, but his depictions of Pikachu are especially electrifying. Get it… because Pikachu is, ah forget it. I think he hold the distinguished title of being the only artist on earth to draw Pikachu all drunky.

Mobile Smart Phone Grocery Shopping in Subway Stations

Imagine waiting for the train while picking out your groceries from a display case filled with products identical in size, scale and color to really grocery store shelves. If the first round of the digital revolution was about making the real virtual, this time it is about making the virtual real again.

South Korean grocery chain Tesco was looking for a way to one-up their major competitor – impossible to do in terms of physical shops due to a lack of actual stores; hence, they turned toward the world wide web with a combination of mobile phone and QR code technologies.

Using smartphones, shoppers can browse the isles during time normally spent idle anyway on their way to or from work. Their purchased products are then delivered by the store, waiting for them when they get home and ready to be put right into the kitchen cabinets, refrigerator or freezer.

Logitech Creates Wireless Solar-Powered Keyboard for Macs

Logitech became famous for creating the world’s first solar PC keyboard last year, but now Apple fans will also be able to surf the net with the same green vigor with the newly unveiled Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard K750. Like the PC version, the solar keyboard can be powered by both indoor and outdoor light, and can be used in total darkness, after a full charge, for three months.

The Milky Way from the top of the world

This stunning photo was taken by the gifted photographer Anton Jankovoy, whose pictures must be seen to be believed. They are surpassingly beautiful, and not just his astrophotos.

He took the one above in Annapurna, a region of Nepal that has been uplifted as a whole piece (called a massif) and reaches elevations of over 8000 meters. I recently spent a day in the Rockies at just less than half that elevation and it was tough; the air pressure was only about 2/3 what it is at sea level — and I’m used to living at an elevation of 1600 meters or so. At 8000 meters, the pressure drops to just 1/3 of that at sea level, and the air is so thin it’s difficult to imagine actually hiking there. But clearly, people do.

And judging from Anton’s photo, it may very well be worth the trouble of visiting. What must it be like to stand in that spot and see first hand such astronomical and geological magnificence?

Maison Martin Margiela Matryoshka Dolls

First carved in 1890 by Vasily Zvyozdochkin, the Matryoshka is a traditional Russian folk doll comprised of a series of nesting figurines, each one smaller and different from the last. With a pattern of embracing heritage and historical quirks as inspirations for their collections, it’s no surprise that Maison Martin Margiela decided to give the Matryoshka its own twist for the Fall/Winter 2011 season. Decidedly more utilitarian and inherently French in design, the Margiela set consists of highly-stylized, white lacquered wood stacking figures. A surefire addition to any contemporary home, the high-design dolls are available now for $170 USD over at ALOHARAG.
